Arbikie The Signature: Ten Years, One Farm, 1,000 Bottles

Family-owned Arbikie Highland Estate Distillery has released The Signature, its first single estate single malt Scotch whisky. Made from Odyssey barley grown on the Angus estate, distilled, matured for 10 years in six bourbon casks, and bottled on site at 48% ABV. Limited to 1,000 bottles worldwide at £250 (US$338). The launch date, 7 September, marks the anniversary of Arbikie filling its first casks a decade ago. Co-founder Iain Stirling said the team had "never been interested in releasing a single malt simply because the market expected it." Arbikie is a certified B Corp, named global Sustainable Distillery of the Year at the Icons of Whisky 2026. Alongside The Signature, the distillery is taking pre-orders for 500 sets of nine single malts shipped annually from a 10-year-old through an 18-year-old. Tasting notes describe ripe peach, banana bread and lemon sherbet on the nose, brioche and apricot marmalade on the palate, with a finish of creamy vanilla, orange blossom and lingering spice.

Murray's take: Single estate is a claim few distilleries can make honestly — grow the barley, distil, mature, and bottle on the same coastal farm. Ten years of patience before your first single malt is rarer still. £250 for 1,000 bottles from a B Corp Sustainability of the Year is premium but defensible. The risk is the market reading "single estate" as marketing rather than provenance. Arbikie needs the liquid to do the talking.

Ardbeg Trudernish: First Permanent 15-Year-Old Joins the Core Range

LVMH-owned Ardbeg has unveiled Trudernish, the first permanent 15-year-old single malt in its core range. Bottled at 48.8% ABV and priced at £80 (US$108), it is aged in bourbon, new charred oak, and oloroso sherry casks. The whisky goes on sale 15 September 2026 from the distillery website, Ardbeg Embassies, the Islay visitor centre, and specialist retailers. Trudernish has already won a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2026. Dr Bill Lumsden MBE, Ardbeg's director of whisky creation, described aromas of "peat and woodsmoke engulfed in melted vanilla ice cream," with tastes of "peat, dark liquorice, and nuts wrapped in milk chocolate" and a "silky thread of vanilla" throughout. The release also introduces a new packaging design across Ardbeg's entire core range: black boxes and labels with earthy colour accents, woodcut-style illustrations by artist Johnny Greenteeth, and each expression's cask recipe and flavour snapshot on the label. Trudernish joins Wee Beastie 5-Year-Old, Ardbeg Ten, An Oa, Uigeadail, and Corryvreckan in the permanent lineup.

Murray's take: A permanent 15-year-old at £80 is the most interesting part of this story. Ardbeg's core range already sits between the 10-year-old and Uigeadail, but neither carries an age statement. Trudernish fills a gap with an age-stated, cask-recipe-specific, Double Gold-verified midpoint. The packaging redesign is overdue — the old bottles were indistinguishable on a shelf. New charred oak in the cask recipe is not a common component in Ardbeg's permanent range, and it explains the vanilla-forward profile Lumsden describes.

Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt Essentials 2026: First Chapter of a Five-Year Series

Nikka Whisky has released Taketsuru Pure Malt Essentials 2026, the first in a five-part limited edition series running annually to 2030, building toward the 30th anniversary of the Taketsuru Pure Malt brand. Bottled at 43% ABV and 70cl, priced at approximately £155 ($195, €180), it is available through La Maison du Whisky boutiques, specialist retailers, and whisky.fr. The 2026 edition focuses on Yoichi Distillery's direct coal-fired distillation, a technique preserved since the distillery's founding on Hokkaidō in 1934. Nikka said the practice is "now exceptionally rare, even in Scotland." The expression blends malt whiskies from Yoichi and Miyagikyo, combining "Yoichi's powerful, smoky and structured character" with "Miyagikyo's finesse, roundness and fruity notes." Official tasting notes describe aromas of "malted and lightly toasted" cereal, "freshly baked biscuit," "tangy apricot jam" and "soft woody notes," with a "full-bodied and rich" palate and a "long and lingering" finish with "delicate peaty notes." Taketsuru Pure Malt was created in 2000 as a tribute to Masataka Taketsuru, founder of Nikka Whisky, who trained as a chemist, travelled to Scotland in 1918 for an apprenticeship, and founded Yoichi in 1934 and Miyagikyo in 1969.

Murray's take: A five-year series ending in a 30th anniversary is a long arc for a limited edition programme, and it signals confidence that collectors will follow each chapter. Leading with Yoichi's coal-fired stills is the right opening move — direct coal-fired distillation is genuinely rare, and it is the production detail that separates Yoichi from almost every other distillery in the world. At £155 for a 43% ABV blended malt, the pricing sits in the premium-but-not-absurd band. The question is whether each annual release will justify its own narrative, or whether the series becomes a calendar exercise.

Rare Find Autumn 2026: Four Sherry Cask Single Malts from Heavyweight Distilleries

Edinburgh-based independent bottler Rare Find has launched its Autumn 2026 Collection, a four-strong range of single cask single malts available from 17 September 2026. The collection pairs full-bodied distilleries with sherry cask maturation or finishing. The Clynelish 8-Year-Old was fully matured in a refill sherry hogshead, bottled at 61.0% ABV with 305 bottles. The Ben Nevis 12-Year-Old was finished for 26 months in a first-fill oloroso sherry quarter cask, at 56.6% ABV with 167 bottles. The Laphroaig 14-Year-Old was finished for 15 months in a first-fill oloroso hogshead from Bodegas Barbadillo, at 56.2% ABV with 217 bottles. The Mortlach 16-Year-Old was finished for 28 months in a first-fill European oak oloroso hogshead, at 54.6% ABV with 268 bottles. All four are bottled at natural cask strength, natural colour, and without chill filtration. James Zorab of Rare Find said the range "explores the relationship between spirit weight, texture and cask influence," with casks selected to "complement what makes the spirit distinctive."

Murray's take: Rare Find's cask-matching logic is sound. Clynelish in refill sherry lets the waxy, coastal spirit stay at the front. Laphroaig in first-fill oloroso from Barbadillo is a bolder call — 15 months is short enough to add richness without burying the smoke. Mortlach in European oak oloroso after 28 months is the heaviest intervention, and on a 16-year-old spirit that already carries meaty depth, it should produce something dense. The Ben Nevis in a quarter cask at 12 years is the outlier — quarter casks accelerate maturation, and 26 months in first-fill oloroso on top of 12 years of base maturation will be intense. Small outturns, natural strength, no chill filtration. This is how independent bottling should work.

English Whisky's August Batch: Debut Single Malts and a 17-Year-Old Rum Cask

The Whiskey Wash's monthly English whisky round-up covers nine new releases from mid-July to mid-August 2026, sourced from Longshot Ventures' Craft Spirits Reports. Ad Gefrin, Northumberland's first legal distillery, released its Cræft Series — three single cask single malts and the distillery's first whisky since filling casks in December 2022. The casks came from Stranahan's in Colorado, Heaven Hill, and an oloroso rerack. Approximately 1,100 bottles sold out, with three further Cræft Series releases planned. Circumstance Distillery in Bristol released its 6 Year Old Organic Single Grain Whisky — the distillery's first age-stated grain whisky, made with 85% malted and 15% unmalted barley and a 14-day fermentation with saison yeast. 400 bottles produced. The English Distillery in Norfolk bottled a 17 Year Old Heavily Smoked Rum Cask as part of its Founders' Private Cellar collection — a heavily peated single malt fully matured in an ex-rum cask, distilled shortly after the site began production in 2006, yielding 177 bottles. Whittaker's in Yorkshire released its 2026 Edition, a small batch single malt distilled between August 2020 and August 2021, matured in two ex-rum casks and one ex-oloroso cask, with 824 bottles available.

Murray's take: The English whisky category is maturing in the literal sense — distilleries that started production in the mid-2000s are now releasing age-stated stock over a decade old, and the new wave (Ad Gefrin, filling since 2022) is already selling out debut releases. The 14-day fermentation at Circumstance is worth noting: most whisky fermentations run 48-96 hours. Two weeks with saison yeast is brewing methodology applied to whisky, and it will produce ester profiles you will not find in a conventional Scotch distillery. The English Distillery's 17-year-old rum cask is the oldest release in this batch and a reminder that English whisky has been in continuous production longer than most people think.
