UK-India FTA Takes Effect — Scotch Whisky Tariffs Cut from 150% to 75%
The UK-India free trade agreement entered into force today, cutting tariffs on Scotch whisky exports to India from 150% to 75%. The rate will continue to fall, settling at 40% after 10 years.
Scotch whisky exports to India were valued at £286m in 2025, with volume equivalent to 220m 700ml bottles — making India the world's biggest Scotch market by volume. The UK government estimates the FTA could boost GDP by £4.8bn and increase bilateral trade by £25.5bn annually.
SWA chief executive Mark Kent said: "Scotch Whisky producers are raising a dram to many years of negotiations to secure this landmark deal, which will support the growth of our industry in India."
Total Scotch exports stood at £5.3bn in 2025, down 1.8% in value and 4.3% in volume, partly due to the US 10% tariff. Indian single malt producers also welcomed the deal — Paul John, founder of Paul John Whisky in Goa, said: "Once more brands come into the market, there will be more awareness created for single malts." The FTA follows the UK's January 2026 deal with China, which cut Scotch tariffs from 10% to 5%.
Murray's take: 150% to 75% is a halving — but 75% is still a massive tariff. The real change comes in year 10 at 40%. With the US market unpredictable and China's tariff already halved, the UK is building a trade architecture that doesn't depend on Washington. Indian single malt makers aren't afraid of the competition — Paul John sees it as awareness-building. The £286m export figure should grow. The question is how fast.
Glenfiddich Launches Permanent Travel Retail Range — The Voyager Collection
Glenfiddich has unveiled The Voyager Collection, a permanent global travel retail (GTR) range of four single malt expressions created exclusively for airports.
The collection includes Warehouse Eight Solera (40% ABV, £53, 1-litre), 12 Year Old Rum Cask Finish (43% ABV, £60, 1-litre), 15 Year Old Sherry Cask Finish (43% ABV, £70, 700ml), and 18 Year Old Port Cask Finish (43% ABV, £100, 700ml). The 18yo is Glenfiddich's first expression finished in Port pipes.
Malt master Brian Kinsman said: "Each expression has its own personality, shaped by a distinctive maturation journey, yet all are united by the same spirit of curiosity."
The range debuts Glenfiddich's refreshed bottle design — a refined stag logo framed by the distillery's founding year, 1887. Rufus Parkinson, GTR managing director at William Grant & Sons, called it "a bold new expression of the brand for consumers around the world." The Voyager Collection is available at major international airports.
Murray's take: Travel retail is where brands fight for the impulse buyer with a duty-free bag. Making this permanent — not a limited edition — is the right call. Four expressions from £53 to £100 gives travellers options. The 18yo Port Cask Finish is the headline: Glenfiddich has never finished in Port pipes before. The refreshed stag signals that William Grant sees GTR as brand-building, not just volume.
Uncle Nearest Co-Founders Dismissed Amid Federal Investigation
Fawn and Keith Weaver, co-founders of Uncle Nearest American whiskey, have been dismissed from the company as its receiver disclosed cooperation with federal investigations.
Receiver Phillip Young Jr terminated the Weavers' employment on 1 June and restricted their access to company facilities. He said the decision "resulted in significantly less confusion among employees and vendors." The business was placed under Young's control in August 2025 following a $108m lawsuit from lender Farm Credit Mid-America. Young has received subpoenas from the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York and the SEC.
Asset sales continue. The Martha's Vineyard property's original buyers cancelled on 2 July due to litigation delays, but a new contract has been negotiated. Young has received a cash offer for the company's Cognac vineyards. An African-American-owned investment firm remains interested in the broader business. Keith Weaver's restaurant concepts at the distillery face eviction over rental arrears.
Murray's take: The Uncle Nearest story was the most compelling brand narrative in American whiskey — a Black-owned distillery honouring Nearest Green, the formerly enslaved man who taught Jack Daniel to make whiskey. That narrative is now buried under federal subpoenas, a $108m lawsuit, dismissed founders, and eviction notices. The receiver's language is clinical: "significantly less confusion." The question is whether anyone buys the brand intact or it gets stripped for parts.
Gordon & MacPhail's Final Talisker — 39 Years Old, 451 Bottles, £1,250
Gordon & MacPhail has released a 39-year-old single cask Talisker — the last time the Talisker name will appear on a Gordon & MacPhail label.
Distilled on 3 March 1987 and matured for 39 years in a refill Sherry butt, the whisky was bottled at cask strength — 51.4% ABV — on 30 April 2026. Limited to 451 bottles, it retails at £1,250 and is one of Talisker's oldest expressions ever released.
The bottling is part of the Connoisseurs Choice Heritage Range, honouring George Urquhart, whom whisky writer Charles MacLean called "the father of single malt." Urquhart launched the range in 1968 to showcase single malts from distilleries rarely seen as individual bottlings — over 2,000 bottlings from nearly 100 distilleries followed.
Stuart Urquhart, operations director, said: "Thirty-nine years in a refill Sherry butt has given this whisky exceptional depth without ever losing Talisker's signature character." Gordon & MacPhail has revived the original black label design from the earliest Connoisseurs Choice bottlings. Whisky critic Serge Valentin called it "yet another marvel" and praised bottling at 39 rather than waiting for 40. Tasting notes: raisin and clove on the nose, jammy figs and cracked black pepper on the palate, a full spicy finish with citrus and ash.
Murray's take: This is an end-of-era release. Gordon & MacPhail bottled Talisker for decades under the Connoisseurs Choice banner. That relationship closes with a 39-year-old refill Sherry butt at cask strength. Bottling at 39 instead of 40 is a statement — Valentin is right that it's "exceedingly chic." The original black label revival is the kind of detail collectors notice. £1,250 for 451 bottles will sell through. The question is what fills the gap — Gordon & MacPhail's Talisker story is done.
The Heart Cut Bottles Ardnamurchan — 24th Release, 543 Bottles, £76
London-based independent bottler The Heart Cut has released its 24th limited expression: a single cask Ardnamurchan aged in a Pedro Ximénez Sherry cask, bottled at 52% ABV.
The whisky was distilled at Ardnamurchan on Scotland's west coast using barley peated to 30ppm. Tasting notes include gentle smoke, citrus, apricots, olive brine, and coastal salinity. Limited to 543 bottles in 500ml format, it is priced at £76 RRP.
Georgie Bell, co-founder of The Heart Cut, said: "Ardnamurchan is part of a new wave of Scottish distilleries choosing flavour over yield. In its short life, it's built the kind of cult following most distilleries take decades to grow."
This is only the third Scotch whisky The Heart Cut has bottled, following Nc'nean and Lochlea. The bottler, founded in 2024, selects casks directly from distilleries rather than brokers. Ardnamurchan Distillery, founded in 2014 by Adelphi, runs almost entirely on renewable energy and launched its first single malt in 2020. Available from The Heart Cut's website and selected bars in Bath, Bristol, and Hampshire.
Murray's take: A distillery making whisky for six years, bottled by a bottler that's existed for two, costing £76 for 500ml. That works because Ardnamurchan built a following on texture and provenance, not age statements. 30ppm is moderate peat — enough to structure the spirit without overwhelming the PX cask. The Heart Cut selecting casks directly from distilleries is the right model at this scale. Their third Scotch bottling says they're choosy. Building a reputation glass by glass.
